Lester was born in Ireland. He joined the NYHA in Rochester, NY. He was 13 at the time. The NY paperwork shows a person named Mr. Murphy signed the paperwork stating that Lester was in his care and was 15 years old (the minimum age to join). Lester took the place of someone who was drafted. Lester was my 2nd Great Grandfather. When you view his records you will see some records that say he deserted. However, he was in the hospital at the time of the Muster Out. The charges were dropped and he was honorably discarded. I've included images of those papers from the Federal Archives. Lester rejoined the service and wound up in KS. He died in a Soldiers Home in Leavenworth. His sister had his body returned to Medina NY and he was buried with the rest of his family in the Boxwood Cemetery. His grave stone had fallen off the platform stone and I had it fixed. The image on this wonderful site is after the fix and after my family visited - you can see the rocks we left. My Grandfather (James Lyon), Lester's grand son, spent his life trying to find this grave and never did. The web made it possible for me. For all men who have relatives that served in the Union Army please consider joining the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). I currently am the Junior Vice Commander of Camp 2 in MI in remembrance of Lester. …

Edwin Bay was a member of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry). The 10th was a light infantry division in the United States Army based at Fort Drum, New York. Originally constituted as a mountain warfare unit, the division was the only one of its size to receive intense specialized training for fighting in mountainous and arctic conditions. Today, the 10th honors that legacy by retaining the "Mountain" designation.
